Chairman Paul Hennessy, Chief Executive David McLoughlin and Assistant Artistic Director Rosetta Cucchi, officially welcomed everyone to Wexford and described the sense of uniqueness of being part of what is a very ‘special’ experience – that of Wexford Festival Opera.  Rosetta described how the entire Wexford Festival Opera company becomes a close knit ‘family’ for two months, unequalled by any other festival, and is the reason Rosetta herself is so eager to return to the small streets of Wexford year after year.

This year, artists have come from the US, Canada, Scotland, Wales, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Georgia, Italy and Ireland. As the world of an Opera performer includes a lot of travelling, some of the artists with younger families have even brought them along to take their place in ‘the Wexford family’!

A number of this year’s artists have appeared in Wexford before, namely Canadian Mezzo, Krisztina Szabo (WFO ’08), Irish Baritone, Owen Gilhooly (WFO ’08) and Irish Mezzo, Paula Murrihy (WFO ’06).

Festival rehearsals are ongoing and take place almost daily. There are the occasional breaks to get something to eat, check emails, or attend a costume fitting, but mostly it’s about rehearsing – and that is what they love – besides performing of course!

For further updates on rehearsals please keep an eye on the Festival blog......
