Newly crowned winner of the AXA Dublin International Piano Competition, Alexej Gorlatch, is to perform a concert of his award winning repertoire, including pieces by Beethoven, Bartok and Chopin at Wexford Opera House on Sunday November 1st, 2009 at 11am in his first Irish recital since winning the prestigious award.

The AXA Dublin International Piano Competition is in its 21st year and is ranked among the top five piano contests in the world. It attracts a very high calibre of international competitors and also offers the best Irish pianists the chance to display their skills against competitors from all over the world. Irish pianist Dr. John O’ Connor chairs the competition.

Alexej Gorlatch was born in Kiev in 1988 and has lived in Germany since 1991.  He began studying piano at the age of seven and is now a student of Professor Karl-Heinz Kammerling and the University of Music and Theatre in Hannover. He has been wining prizes since he was eleven and at the 50th Gortrian-Steinweg competition he won the top prize of the entire competition - awarded for only the second time in the history of this competition.  He was prize-winner of the Ettlingen International Competition (twice) and Vladimir Horowitz International Competition in Kiev, among many others. In 2006 Alexej won first prize at the Hamamatsu Piano Competition in Japan and 2nd prize in the Seoul International Piano Competition in 2008. He crowned all these achievements when he was awarded 1st prize in the AXA Dublin International Piano Competition in May 2009. He has appeared in solo recitals in Carnegie Hall in New York, Salle Cortot in Paris and Kioi Hall in Tokyo, as well as in concerts with the State National Orchestra of the Ukraine, the NHK Orchestra Japan, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra, Japan.  He has also appeared with the Bochum Symphony Orchestra, Sudwestdeutsche Philharmonic Orchestra and the German Kammerphilarmonie.

Alexej Gorlatch has wowed audiences as well as critics across the globe, leading the New York Times to say that his performance was “heartfelt, dignified and soulful” after his Carnegie Hall recital and that “his virtuoso performances are in stark contrast to his youth.”
