Chorus of Wexford Festival Opera
A highlight of the 2011 Festival will be the formation of a Chorus of Wexford Festival Opera, which follows on from the critical success and very positive feedback that resulted from the formation of the Orchestra of Wexford Festival Opera in 2006.
One of the principal aims behind the creation of the Chorus is to nurture the future stars of the Wexford opera stage. The Chorus is made up of thirty-two talented young singers, some of whom are outstanding students and some of whom are professional singers on the threshold of their careers. Most of the singers are from Ireland and the UK. In addition to appearing in the three main operas, the Chorus will perform Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem in the Choral Concert on 5 November, and individual members may be spotted taking part in other events during the Festival.
The Artistic Director has appointed Gavin Carr as Chorus Master and we welcome him back to Wexford. In 2006 Gavin was the Assistant Conductor and Chorus Master for Don Gregorio (Donizetti) and the Assistant Conductor for Transformations (Susa). In 2007 he made his operatic conducting debut at Wexford in the ShortWorks production of La tragédie de Carmen, which was nominated for ‘Best Opera Production’ in the Irish Times Theatre Awards that year. He is the conductor of the Bristol Bach Choir, Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and the Philharmonia Chorus. In 2007 he founded and conducts the critically acclaimed choir, Chorus Angelorum.
Elenor Bowers-Jolley is the Manager of the Chorus of Wexford Festival Opera. She also enjoys a career as a professional singer and has performed as soprano soloist and as a chorus member in the UK, Europe and the USA . She is both a member and the manager of Chorus Angelorum.
Wexford Festival Opera offers its deepest appreciation of the Prague Chamber Choir and its conductor Lubomír Mátl, for their many years of memorable performances at Wexford.
