In front of a capacity crowd of their peers, Wexford Festival Opera received the award for ‘Best Opera’ for the 2008 production of ‘The Mines of Sulphur’ by Sir Richard Rodney Bennett.  This production was directed by the same artistic team, Director Michael Barker-Caven and Designer Joe Vaněk, who won the Irish Times Theatre Award in the ‘Best Opera Production’ category for the WFO 2006 production of ‘Transformations’.

Lighting Designer, Paul Keoghan, was also nominated in the ‘Best Lighting’ category for his work on ‘The Mines of Sulphur’, but was pipped at the post by Kevin Treacy, who has designed lighting for the Wexford Festival Opera shortworks for the last few years.  Although Kevin won the ‘Best Lighting’ award for work on a different production, we would like to congratulate him on his win.  Both gentlemen are incredibly talented and well respected in their profession and Wexford Festival Opera are delighted to have benefited from their talents.

Wexford Opera House was also a winner on the night, picking up the ‘Judges’ Special Award’.  Accepting the award for the Wexford Opera House, WFO Chairman Paul Hennessy gave an invigorating acceptance speech, reminding us all that the dream and vision of the Wexford Opera House came before the Celtic Tiger.  ‘Ireland finally has an Opera House that it can be proud of and Wexford has a facility worthy of the artists who grace its stage and the patrons who support its work’.

Congratulations to all involved!
