Looking back to the 1950’s

Wexford Festival Opera are delighted at the announcement of a special Window Display Competition, sponsored by Skytel Rocket Broadband, forming part of the 70th Anniversary celebrations of the festival.  Wexford businesses are being encouraged to take part once again this year by decorating their windows to coincide with the opening of this year’s Festival in October.  

Chairperson of the Wexford Festival Trust, Dr Mary Kelly, was at hand to welcome members of the business community to the outdoor launch on a sunny Friday evening (July 23) outside Green Acres restaurant.

Dr. Kelly paid a special tribute to Wexford businesses for the tremendous effort and enterprise they invest in decorating their premises during the festival. She announced that the winners (Best Creative Window, Best Use of Space, Set and Location) will be awarded a cash prize of €500 each and will be invited to host a Pop-Up event during the Festival.

Participation in the Window Display Competition has never been easier: entrants must design a window display using the 1950s as their inspiration. An extra incentive is the fact that a creative team at Wexford Festival Opera is available to assist with ideas and with sourcing vintage props. (Contact richella@wexfordopera.com)

A judging panel of three – Julia Burbach, Director at Wexford Festival Opera; Cécile Trémolières, set and costume designer and Alan Corcoran, presenter at South East Radio – will visit all of the participating shops on October 15th.

Among the attendance at the launch of the Window Display Competition, which will be sponsored in 2021 by Rocket Broadband, were the new Mayor of Wexford, Garry Laffan; assistant Mayor Cllr. John Hegarty and the Chairperson of Wexford Co. Council, Cllr Barbara-Anne Murphy.
