Following the great success of ‘Opera in the Garden’ last summer, Wexford Festival Opera is delighted to once again partner with The Merrion Hotel to bring a taste of Wexford to Dublin, for two exclusive performances on 5 and 6 June 2019.
Audiences attending will have the opportunity to preview one of Wexford Festival Opera’s 2019 ShortWork opera productions in an open-air performance. This performance of Le Docteur Miracle by Georges Bizet, will be specially staged to complement the stunning gardens of The Merrion Hotel.
Le Docteur Miracle is a comic operette in one act by the French composer Georges Bizet and centres around a young man’s attempt to win the hand of the mayor's daughter.
Written when he was just eighteen, the opera by Bizet with a libretto by Léon Battu and Ludovic Halévy was adapted from the play, St Patrick's Day by Irish playwright Richard Sheridan. This charming and bubbly piece contains echoes of Rossini and gives a foretaste of Bizet's most famous opera, Carmen.
Numbers will be limited for this black-tie event, which will commence with a champagne reception. The performance will be followed by a private dinner served in the Georgian Salons of The Merrion, created by Executive Head Chef, Ed Cooney.
Peter MacCann, General Manager of The Merrion Hotel, said: “We are delighted to welcome the world-renowned Wexford Opera Company to perform one of their ShortWork operas against the backdrop of The Merrion’s tranquil terrace gardens. Last year’s event was a huge success and we were thrilled with how it was received by all those in attendance.”
Artistic Director of Wexford Festival Opera, David Agler added, “Through our shared love of the arts, it is with great pleasure that we partner with The Merrion to present a preview of one of our ShortWork operas, 'Le Docteur Miracle'. The Terrace Garden is an idea setting in which to create this bespoke event and to offer people a taste of what to expect in Wexford this October.”
Winner of the 2017 Best Opera Festival in the World title, Wexford Festival Opera runs from 22 October – 3 November. wexfordopera.com
