President McAleese to officially close 60th Wexford Festival Opera after 14 years as Patron

President Mary McAleese, and her husband Senator Martin McAleese, will attend the final performance of the 60th anniversary Wexford Festival Opera as guests of honour, on Saturday, 5 November, in what will be one of the President’s last official functions of her 14 year term as Uachtarán na hÉireann.  As Patron of this publicly and critically acclaimed festival, President McAleese first attended Wexford Festival Opera in 1998 in the old Theatre Royal. Her most recent visit was in 2008 at the inaugural festival in the new Wexford Opera House.

Prior to the performance of the final opera, ‘Gianni di Parigi’ by Donizetti, President McAleese will unveil a plaque to mark the centenary of the birth of Dr. Tom Walsh, the Founder of Wexford Festival Opera.  Dr. Walsh’s daughter, Victoria Walsh-Hamer, will also attend the unveiling ceremony.

The 61st Wexford Festival Opera will run for 12 uninterrupted days and nights from Wednesday, 24 October to Sunday 4 November, 2012.  Priority booking opens on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, with general booking commencing on Tuesday, June 5, 2012.

The 60h Wexford Festival Opera is grant aided by the Arts Council, Fáilte Ireland, and Wexford County and Borough Councils.
