A Window To The World Of Wexford In The 1950s

It’s definitely Festival time in Wexford when the Window Display Competition is up and running!
Wexford Festival Opera was delighted last week to present prizes to the two winning shops–Oxfam for ‘Most Creative Window’ and Barnardos for ‘Best Use of Space’.
The prizes are sponsored by Skytel Rocket Broadband, a locally based company that specialises in supplying fibre broadband and wireless broadband to over 5,000 business and residential customers in the county.
Although there were only two winners, Wexford businesses put in a tremendous effort this year in decorating their windows for the 70th anniversary of Wexford Festival Opera. There was an air of excitement in town on Friday last as the judges - Julia Burbach, Director at Wexford Festival Opera; Cécile Trémolières, set and costume designer and Alan Corcoran, presenter at South East Radio - visited all the participating shops. The theme - Wexford in the 1950’s–brought out an array of creativity, from opera and gramophones in the 1950s to rock & roll-themed windows. An extra incentive this year was the fact that a creative team at Wexford Festival Opera was available to assist with ideas and with sourcing vintage props.
For many visitors and locals alike, their visit to town during the Festival to view the windows is one of their fondest memories and, this year, they can enjoy the efforts of over 50 shops and businesses that have gone to great lengths to embellish their windows for the Festival.
The competition coincides with a photographic exhibition at Wexford Library which features scenes from Wexford in the first decade of the opera festival.
