The Plot
Act I
The story is set in the fictional English town of Loxford in the early 20th century. Lady Billows, a wealthy and influential resident, is looking for a virtuous young person to crown as May Queen. The town leaders suggest Albert Herring, a shy and innocent greengrocer's assistant who lives with his widowed mother. Albert is reluctant to participate, but eventually agrees after being persuaded by his mother and the town leaders. The May Day celebrations are held, and Albert is crowned as King, with a young girl named Nancy as his Queen. After the festivities, Albert disappears, causing concern among the townspeople.
Act II
The next morning, everyone in Loxford is searching for Albert. Eventually, he is found in a pub with Sid and Nancy, two of his friends. It turns out that Albert got drunk the previous night and spent all his prize money on a wild night out. The townspeople are scandalized by Albert's behavior and Lady Billows revokes his title as May King. However, Albert decides to embrace his newfound freedom and leaves Loxford to start a new life.
