Welcome to Wexford Festival Opera
A world of music, culture, coastal beauty and warm Irish hospitality awaits you.
Every autumn, the charming town of Wexford, in Ireland's scenic south-east, comes alive with the sound of opera. For over 70 years, Wexford Festival Opera has welcomed audiences from around the world to discover rarely performed operatic gems in an atmosphere of warmth and wonder.
Our success is due in no small part to the legendary welcome ‘this most friendly of festivals’ (The Guardian) extends to visitors. We invite you to join us for a journey of music, storytelling, and discovery — all set against the backdrop of Ireland’s renowned hospitality.
Whether you are a seasoned opera lover or a curious traveller seeking unforgettable cultural experiences, Wexford Festival Opera promises a celebration like no other.
Hailed as ‘one of the world’s most remarkable festivals’ (The Financial Times), October is the perfect time for an unforgettable Autumn getaway that will linger long after the final curtain.
Our Story
A unique operatic experience, steeped in history.
Since its founding in 1951, Wexford Festival Opera has grown into one of the world’s leading opera festivals. Each year, the festival presents a carefully curated selection of rarely performed works, breathing new life into forgotten masterpieces.
Primarily taking place in the stunning National Opera House, the festival transforms Wexford into a global stage. Visitors are welcomed not just by exceptional performances but also by the warm spirit of a town that truly comes alive during the festival season.
Beyond the opera house, the festivities spill out onto Wexford’s charming streets, where free pop-up events are performed around the town. Delight in unexpected musical moments over lunch, during a stroll down the High Street, or over a drink in a local pub.
The National Opera House
Ireland’s award-winning home of opera.
Nestled into the heart of this beautiful harbour town is the National Opera House, Ireland’s world-class, custom-built opera house. It serves as the primary festival venue, though events also take place at various locations around the town. Acoustically superb and visually magnificent, this landmark of cultural ambition and architectural beauty is rightfully considered one of the country's finest venues - and is a destination in its own right.
Recognised with numerous awards, it has become a beacon for artistic excellence and a warm, welcoming space for artists and audiences alike.
