Irish soprano Sophie Whelan is completing a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she studies with Professor David Pollard. In September 2026, she will continue her training at Guildhall on the Master of Performance programme. She was also a member of the 2025 Glyndebourne Academy cohort.
As a soloist, Sophie has performed with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in Vaughan Williams’s Serenade to Music, and has appeared with The Celtic Tenors and North Dublin Singers. In 2026, she gave her first recital at Wigmore Hall as a finalist in the Irish Heritage Bursary Competition. As a member of the Dublin Youth Chamber Choir, she has performed for the President of Ireland and at the International Choir Games in Sweden.
Recent roles in operatic scenes include Leonore (Fidelio), Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), Alice Ford (Falstaff), Female Chorus (The Rape of Lucretia), Mary Crawford (Mansfield Park), and Angelica (Suor Angelica). She also appeared in Guildhall's Opera production of Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking as a member of the Children’s Chorus in 2023.
Sophie has participated in masterclasses with Dame Ann Murray, Sir Thomas Allen, Matteo Dalle Fratte, Sophia Muñoz and Tobias Truniger. In 2024, she was awarded the Song Prize at the Junior Charles Wood Song Competition.
